Kara’s primary focus at Gutwein Law is on helping clients navigate the complexities of intellectual property law. Specifically, she helps clients of all sizes – from individual inventors to large patent portfolio companies – with procuring, utilizing, enforcing, and defending patents and trademarks. She brings extensive experience in the areas of medical devices, general mechanical applications, software, biotechnology, automotive devices, and aviation components.
Kara spent the early parts of her career in a firm setting working in the areas of patent litigation and licensing. She then moved to Munich, Germany where she worked as in-house counsel for a global innovative system partner to the mobility and automotive industry. Following her spell in Europe, Kara spent several more years working at various law firms in the U.S., including acting as a sole practitioner, helping clients with all aspects of intellectual property. Additionally, Kara spent seven years in political positions in the City of North Oaks, acting as Mayor, as well as serving on the city council and planning commission. Now, in her role at Gutwein Law, Kara thrives in working on challenging issues, being a part of a dynamic team, and using her vast experience to ensure her clients succeed.
Outside of the office, Kara enjoys spending time with her family, traveling, and playing tennis. She also volunteers with the Children’s Hospital Guild.
Kara received her undergraduate degree from Marquette University in Biomedical Electrical Engineering before receiving her J.D. from the University of New Hampshire – Franklin Pierce with a focus in Intellectual Property Law. Kara is licensed to practice in Minnesota and Washington D.C., and is a registered U.S. Patent Attorney.
