How can startups leverage intellectual property when raising capital?

Stuart Gutwein, Business Law Attorney: Your intellectual property is not the most important thing when you go to talk with a potential investor. But you can leverage your intellectual property, and you leverage it by demonstrating to the potential investors that you have a solid IP plan.
Investors are going to look at your intellectual property plan through the lens of market demand and opportunity, and innovation and competition. You need to demonstrate to investors that you’ve thoroughly vetted your own IP, that you’ve looked at the market and you’ve thoroughly vetted the market. One thing that you’ll always do if you have a good IP plan is you’re going to demonstrate to potential investors that your management team is top-notch, and that’s something that investors always consider very important.
